Mandorla Art Award

Anglican Priest Bob Booth wins highly commended place and People’s choice prize at the Mandorla Art Award.

This year our very own Bob Booth submitted a portrayal of the parable of the Good Samaritan entitled “I am your neighbour” to the Mandorla Art Award.  This painting demonstrates Bob’s painterly style and an imagination that resists sentimentality.  The man who fell among robbers is found lying half naked in a rocky way with the river Jordan in the distance. Bending over him is the Good Samaritan with his arms encompassing the length of the figure.  He is wearing a white cap or taqiyah that is worn by Muslim men and this injects a welcome hint of controversy into the picture.

In the top left of the picture are figures looking on, the most significant one in pink is looking back on the scene while moving off down the track.  The richness of the paint and the tension in the scene make this a very moving and significant picture. This painting has been bought by Servite College.

The Mandorla Art Award is sponsored by St John of God Health Care, the Catholic, Anglican and Uniting Church as well as the Benedictine Community of New Norcia.
